The first stretch goal is Syias at $600, and we're already halfway there! If you'd like the Syias pin and already backed the Fanud one, you can change your pledge to two pins to be able to nab one for yourself. If you'd rather wait it out, remember you can always include it as an add-on after the campaign ends on February 12.

THE BACKERKIT GOES LIVE IN 5 HOURS WHOO!!!! (2pm EST+1, Puerto Rico time) Today we’re learning about Ciante’s design. Which I feel is the most straightforward out of the six. However, it’s still a fun design to work with and always a pleasure to draw.

The festival itself is also a neat experience, though I’ve only ever been to the one in Playa, not the main part of town. Maybe I’ll change that this year!  Unfortunately, historical revisionism and attempts to plead for tourism/The Aesthetic (tm) have led to revisionism and rewrites of our culture. I’d love to get into details someday, but this isn’t the time for that. Now is the time to celebrate and discuss WHAT made this character the way he is! So, despite the insanely summarized origin story of the vejigante, I hope you learned something today!

(Also, if you’re confused why there’s a sardine in a coffin, don’t worry about it!)

 

Sorry if it sounds like a clickbaity Youtube video, but hear me out! This one's really fascinating and actually references anthropology.

This one is always fun for me to talk about since Syias is the one most tied to his role, both in design and attitude. Even the name is derived from the word "scythe". He's a stern and, no pun intended, dead set in his ways kind of character, yet it's clear he cares for Bells/Raju and exists to offer comfort and protection to those around him, even through the inevitable. He is merely a guide like Greek mythology's Charon, not the actual embodiment of death.

I don't usually take the time I should to write about the inspiration for the characters in Cosmic Fish, so this is the perfect time! And if you learned something, then win-win!

A lot of Cosmic Fish lore, its look, and inner themes are inspired by Puerto Rico and personal experiences, so you'll be reading about anecdotes or specific places that were very present in my upbringing as more masks get revealed throughout the week.
